In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works (1 Timothy 2:9-10).

Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God (1 Peter 3:3-4).

Do not be conformed to this world (Romans 12:2).

While the Bible does not provide a legalistic list of specific items that we can and cannot wear or how long or short our clothing can be, God leaves it to us as a matter of the heart. Our clothing can reveal the condition of our hearts. Ina world full of sin and immorality, it would seem that Christians would be even more diligent to be certain to dress in ways that are pleasing to God. Men should want the females in their family not to dress so as to promote lust. Females themselves should want to be careful that their clothing glorifies God and not their own bodies.

If women dress in ways that promote lust, then they themselves are guilty of sin. Being among Christians ought to be a safe place for those struggling with lust, yet I have heard women in church say that they will dress how they want, because if a man has a problem with lust, it is his problem and it does not matter how a female dresses. How foolish and uncaring such a statement is! I have heard Christian females compliment other Christian females on their tight or low-cut shirts or their short skirts or dresses, calling them cute rather than immodest.

Certainly men can be immodest, too. They can wear tight shirts, short shorts, or those ridiculous tight shorts in order to draw attention to themselves. However, men rarely come to church wearing tank tops or tight shorts. I see no reason for men to take their shirts off when playing golf or mowing their lawns. Men should dress modestly, too.

We rarely discuss modesty in church, for if we do, we just might offend most of the women there. Do you want some guidelines? Okay. Women—if you are wearing a skirt or dress and your knees are not covered when you sit down, your skirt or dress is too short. If your pants or shorts are tight, they are immodest. If you are wearing those tight yoga pants or shorts (whether to church or to exercise in) as the outer layer, you ought to be ashamed and embarrassed. If you are wearing those tight little shorts to run track or cross country or to play volleyball, you ought to be ashamed. Men – if you allow your daughters to wear those immodest cheerleading or sports uniforms, you ought to be ashamed of yourselves. It is time for Christians to stand upon the Word of God and let our friends and our coaches and school leaders know that we will not be wearing those uniforms that are immodest and that cause us to sin against God. Even Christian colleges often have allow their females to dress immodestly in order to be like the world. There is a simple solution: do not send your daughters or sons to colleges where the leaders allow immodesty.

There is something different, something special when a female dresses modestly. She shows that she is not like the world. She shows that she loves God and cares about what He says, that she cares more about pleasing Him than she does about imitating the world in order to draw the attention of the unsaved. Females—if you go to the pool or the beach in a bikini, it is immodest. Fathers and mothers – if you dress your daughters in bikinis or think your little girl looks cute in that short dress, then you better wake up fast and seek God’s wisdom and glory.

Can anyone explain to me how a Christian female wearing those skintight yoga pant things is in any way dressing modestly? I am tired of seeing Christian women walking around at farmer’s markets, grocery stores, and everywhere else–including church events, in those ridiculous looking pants. Christian females have no business wearing those skintight shorts as the outer layer to run track, play volleyball, or anything else.
They do not help anyone walk faster while exercising, and they certainly do not help any female look better, in my opinion.

May Christian men, women, and children be pure on the inside, and show it on the outside. May we no longer be confused with the unsaved because we dress as immodestly as they do. Let us ask God what pleases Him rather than ignore God to do what we want. May we have more women who love God and show it by dressing modestly, with the quiet and gentle spirit that are precious in the sight of God.

Modesty matters, in children and in adults.
